In 1939, "GrossDeutschland" was reorqanized as an infantry regiment, and began its rise to full division. It was committed to the western front in May of 1940, where it fought the French near the Meuse River. GD served most of its long career on the eastern front. GD eventually became a Panzergrenadier Division and took part in many crucial battles, being a much utilized "Fire Brigade" formation that was posted wherever the fighting was most desperate.
